Claims Handbook Newly RevisedThe NFIP Flood Insurance Claims Handbook was created by FEMA to assist insured flood victims through the process of filing a claim. It contains several sections that explore what property owners can do before a flood to facilitate claims handling should they become flood victims as well as what steps to take after a flood to hasten claims processing.In November 2006, the NFIP Flood Insurance Claims Handbook was revised to include several more pages of information in the section dedicated to "Addressing Questions About Your Insurance Claim." This section describes the claims appeal process and provides a list of what to include in the letter of appeal submitted to FEMA by the insured if issues have not been resolved satisfactorily with the claim adjuster, adjuster's supervisor, and insurance agent or insurance company. Also included is a list of documentation that must accompany an appeal letter to FEMA. The list of required documentation has now been greatly expanded to include dozens of examples. New information also has been added regarding limitations to the appeals process as well as FEMA's procedure for resolving claim appeals. Posted in the margins throughout the handbook, there are "Tips" to help consumers make choices before, during, and after a flood to better protect their safety, and "Notes" that clarify the requirements and limitations of NFIP claims adjusting. The newly revised NFIP Flood Insurance Claims Handbook is available on the FEMA website. A faxable, black-and-white version of the document also is available.
