Map Modernization Made EasierObtaining up-to-date information about flood hazards is the first step in preventing and reducing flood losses. The Federal Government has been identifying flood hazards since the NFIP was created in 1968. In 2004, FEMA embarked on an ambitious, multi-year, Presidential initiative to update the Nation's flood maps and make them more readily available, more reliable, and easier to use and maintain. Today, Flood Map Modernization (“Map Mod”) is transforming the way flood maps are created, viewed, and used.On the Map Mod page of the FEMA website, visitors will see a wide selection of resources to assist NFIP stakeholders and consumers who want to learn more about this initiative or need materials to help support it. The following items are some of the latest additions. Map Mod Video The new Map Mod video offers information about the entire range of Map Mod products. It shows how to access the materials described below and other resources. The Map Mod video can be downloaded from the FEMA Information Resource Library. To see the video, visitors scroll down to the third chapter, “Map Mod QuickTime format,” and click on “View.” Due to the size of this file, it may take a few minutes to download. By clicking on “Accept the WinZip,” the WinZip folder will appear, and visitors double click on “Map Mod file” to produce the “Quick Pro” file option. When this has been accepted, click the play button to begin the video. The video is 8 ½ minutes long. Letters of Final Determination A Letter of Final Determination (LFD) is a letter sent to a floodprone NFIP community stating that a new Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) or Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) will become effective in 6 months and the community must adopt a compliant floodplain management ordinance by that effective date. The following LFD Lists are available to be downloaded.
Map Modernization Management Support The purpose of Map Modernization Management Support (MMMS) is to provide, through a Cooperative Agreement, a means to ensure MMMS partners can support the Map Mod effort through activities that do not directly result in production of a new or revised flood hazard map. These support activities include a variety of administration and management measures. The following are a number of MMMS documents that can be downloaded from the FEMA website.
Procedure Memorandums and Analyses FEMA has issued several Procedure Memorandums (PMs) and analyses to provide guidance for various aspects of map production and adoption. Following are several guidance documents that can be downloaded from the FEMA Information Resource Library.

Working Together to Make the Floodplain Safer Map Mod integrates with other FEMA products and initiatives, such as HAZUS-MH, a dynamic multi-hazard risk assessment methodology. It is a powerful tool for analyzing and displaying potential losses from floods, as well as other natural hazards. The combined use of digital flood mapping data being produced by Map Mod and the use of HAZUS-MH for planning allows communities and other stakeholders to ensure that better hazard mitigation and disaster response plans are in place. Through these efforts, flood risk is being objectively and systematically quantified, tracked, and reduced. |
